role models.

I had a discussion the other night with a dear friend (who needs to start a blog btw. Ahem, MEL haha) about role models and the part they play in our lives and their presence in society.

Growing up, I’ve always had a handful of role models. From family and friends to public figures, they’ve all influenced my life in one way or another and continue to do so.

But when thinking about my list of role models who are public figures, I noticed that they are predominantly male. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I wonder when that day will come when I see a predominant figure in the media who I look up to who is a direct reflection of myself: A Pilipina. Now don’t get me wrong, there are a number of incredible women of color today in media (and the role models don’t only extend to public figures of course, so we have many to look up to), but in my opinion, there should be more. There are times when I do feel that absence in today’s society and hope for that change to soon come.

With all that said, who is your role model?
